Like me are you avoiding cold drinks or ice-cream because of tooth sensitivity? When you are not able to drink a cold beverage you might think – why are my teeth sensitive to cold? Let’s find out the answer and the home remedies for tooth sensitivity.

What is Tooth Sensitivity?

The experience of discomfort triggered by contact of the teeth with hot or cold foodstuff is termed as tooth sensitivity. A person suffering from tooth sensitivity often encounters a sudden and sharp pain while drinking cold beverages or eating hot food.

The main reason behind the sharp pain is dentin, which is the underlying layer of the teeth. When dentin gets exposed to cold or hot foodstuff, the dentinal tubules provide the stimuli. This stimulation causes a sensation in the teeth.

Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

The withdrawing of gum tissues makes the dentin exposed to the foodstuff. It is generally concluded that tooth sensitivity to cold indicates the loss of enamel, dental cavity or gum tissue recession.

The sensitivity to heat is the result of cracks in the teeth or swelling of the gums. Many people have sensitive teeth to cold and hot beverages. The gum tissues can rupture due to the following reasons.

Over Brushing and Aging- Brushing the teeth with hard-bristled toothbrush leads to the wear down of the enamel. Excessive brushing causes the recession of the protective layer of the teeth and makes the dentin exposed to the foodstuff. Aging is also one of the factors, which makes the protective layer thin and leads to tooth sensitivity. Some dental diseases like periodontal make the gums move away from the teeth. This also develops pain while eating cold food stuff.

Cavity, Plaque Accumulation, and Gum Diseases- Cavity is one of the reasons of tooth sensitivity. The pain is much higher in this case of tooth sensitivity, which is initiated by cavities. Plaque accumulation on the root surface of the teeth causes sensitivity. An extreme accrual of plaque makes the enamel wear away.

Apart from this, sore or inflamed gum tissue also causes tooth sensitivity. Due to loss of ligament, the root surface gets exposed, leading to pain while eating or drinking cold food.

Teeth Grinding and Cracked Teeth- If you are suffering from teeth grinding then the clenching of your teeth damages the enamel. Grinding teeth affect your dental health and causes huge damage to the teeth including tooth sensitivity. The cracked tooth during teeth grinding or due to decay also leads to tooth sensitivity.

Toothpaste and Mouthwash- Yes, the harmful chemicals in your toothpaste and mouthwash cause tooth sensitivity. The tooth whitening products generally use   harsh chemicals, which damage the enamel and make your teeth sensitive to cold. Some of the mouthwashes cause tooth sensitivity in the long term. The acid content of the mouthwashes worsens tooth sensitivity.

Consumption of Acidic Food- Regular consumption of acid foodstuffs, such as tomatoes, grapes, pickles or citrus fruits have an adverse impact on the enamel. The recession of enamel due to continuous intake of acidic food leads to tooth sensitivity.

Dental Procedures- Some of the dental procedures, such as tooth restoration, crown placement also cause tooth sensitivity.

So, poor dental health is one of the most important reasons for tooth sensitivity.
