These are the early symptoms of constipation found in babies, who are suffering from constipation.

Causes of Baby Constipation

Baby constipation occurs due to many reasons. Baby’s body is very sensitive and a small change in diet can cause constipation. Thus, the mother has to be very cautious about the diet and fluid intake of the baby. The causes of baby constipation are:

Low Water Level- The baby generally refuses to drink milk if he/she is suffering from cold, throat infection or if he/she is teething. In such cases, the water level in the body reduces drastically, providing a possibility for constipation. If your baby is at the breastfeeding stage, then additional fluids are not required. If your baby is having solid food, then you need to provide additional fluids to the baby. You also need to give more fluid to your baby during the summer.

Switching to Formula Milk- The switching of diet from breast milk to formula milk causes constipation. Formula milk is difficult to digest as compared to breast milk. Formula milk makes the poop a bit firm and the baby feels uneasy to pass the poop.
Switching to Solid Food  Switching from a liquid diet to solid food is one of the reasons for baby constipation. At the initial stage, it is difficult for the baby’s body to digest solid food. If your baby gets constipated by the introduction of new food, then reduce the amount of the new food. You can also start a combination of liquid and solid diet to balance the baby’s diet.

Low Fiber Intake- The low content of fiber in the diet also causes constipation in babies. If your baby has already started eating solid foodstuff, then provide fruits and vegetables which are rich in fiber. The high content of fiber in the food makes the baby excrete the waste easily.

Medications- If your baby is ill and under medication, then the intake of some medicines may lead to constipation. The antibiotics or iron supplements are often difficult to digest and lead to constipation.
